Why “Follow Your Passion” Is Failing Gen Z …and what to say instead

For years, “just follow your passion” has been the go-to career advice offered to students and early-career professionals. It’s easy to say. It sounds inspiring. But for many members of Gen Z, it’s starting to feel… empty.

This generation is entering the workforce with a very different lens—one shaped by economic uncertainty, cultural shifts, mental health awareness, and a growing demand for meaning in their work. So when well-meaning adults tell them to simply “find what they love and do it,” many are left wondering: What if I don’t know what that is yet? What if I have more than one passion? What if none of them pay the bills?

The result? An overwhelming sense that they’re already behind—or broken—before they’ve even begun.

What Gen Z is Really Looking For
In a recent conversation on the Accounting ARC podcast’s Student-led Conversations series, two Gen Z student hosts opened up about this exact pressure, challenging the one-size-fits-all narrative and offering a refreshingly honest look at what young professionals are actually seeking from their careers. Their take? Purpose, flexibility, mentorship, and room to grow matter more than finding a singular “passion.”

And employers? They’d better be paying attention.

Here’s What Gen Z Actually Values:

  1. Passion Isn’t a Job Title – It’s not something you wake up and “just know.” Passion is discovered over time, through experience, curiosity, and trial and error.
  2. Exploration Is More Valuable Than Early Decisions – Gen Z doesn’t want to be boxed in by rigid career tracks before they’ve had a chance to explore. They want room to test, pivot, and grow.
  3. Flexibility and Balance Are Non-Negotiable – Hustle culture is out. Psychological safety, boundaries, and meaningful work are in.
  4. Boundaries = Emotional Intelligence – Knowing your limits isn’t entitlement—it’s maturity. Gen Z is building careers that honor their well-being and energy.
  5. People Matter More Than Perks – Who they work with matters just as much as what they work on. Culture, mentorship, and community are make-or-break.

So… What Should We Be Saying Instead?
If “follow your passion” is outdated, what’s the alternative? Here are a few phrases that actually resonate:

  • “Let’s explore what energizes you.”
  • “You don’t have to have it all figured out yet.
  • “Try new things—passion often follows action.”
  • “Notice what drains you. That’s just as important.”
  • “Growth happens through curiosity, not pressure.”

This shift in language opens the door to real connection. It tells Gen Z: You’re not behind. You’re just beginning—and that’s exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Bottom line:
It’s time to retire the advice that served one generation and reimagine what career guidance can look like in a world that’s constantly changing. Gen Z isn’t lost. They’re looking for something real. And we have a chance to help them find it—not with clichés, but with curiosity, support, and truth.
