Accounting for the Future: Redefining Success Across Generations

Season:

1

Episode:

7

What happens when three people from three different life stages sit down to talk about the future? On this episode of the Student-led Conversations Podcast, a high school student, a college senior, and a seasoned accounting professional come together to explore how the path to purpose in the accounting profession isn’t one-size-fits-all—but it’s always worth the journey.

Hosted by students Arpan Grewal and Chayton Farlee, and featuring guest Nealy Wheat, CAE, this conversation uncovers the often-unspoken questions students have as they navigate their careers—especially when their route doesn’t follow the “traditional” script.

Rethinking the “Right” Path
For Chayton, nearing graduation as an accounting major, and Arpan, still in high school, their paths may look different, but they share a common challenge: confronting the outdated stereotypes about accounting. “People think accounting is just numbers and spreadsheets,” said Chayton, “but when I actually started gaining real experience, I saw it was so much more.”

Nealy, now a first-generation professional, resonated deeply with that. She shared how her early college professors questioned her direction and how it took time—and a lot of perseverance—to stay the course. “I had to prove myself again and again,” she recalled, “but it shaped who I am.”

Pushing Through Doubt and Finding Community
Doubt, pressure, and feeling underestimated were common themes. Arpan admitted, “It’s hard when people already assume what you’re capable of based on your age or background.” Nealy agreed, sharing how those moments of doubt—especially as a first-gen student—only made her more determined. But the key, they all agreed, was finding the right community and mentorship.

Redefining Success and Building Confidence
One of the most powerful takeaways from the episode was how each guest is redefining what success looks like. Whether it’s Chayton getting involved in podcasting and networking or Arpan exploring new career paths, the message was clear: You don’t have to follow the same blueprint to succeed.

Nealy encouraged students to trust themselves even when their path doesn’t look like everyone else’s. “Be brave enough to build the path that doesn’t exist yet,” she advised.

Advice for Future Trailblazers
For first-generation students, or anyone unsure of what’s next, the trio offered encouragement: Ask questions. Seek mentors. Take opportunities even when they feel uncomfortable. And remember, your story matters—even if it’s still being written.

Key Takeaways:

  • There’s no one right path. Whether you’re still in school or years into your career, your journey matters.
  • Mentorship is everything. The right support can change how you see yourself.
  • Representation matters. Seeing others like you in leadership roles makes a difference.
  • Confidence is built through experience. Networking, asking questions, and showing up all help.
