Students Are Helping Shape the Future of the Accounting Profession

Center for Accounting Transformation expands student-led initiatives with new philanthropic support.
The future of the accounting profession is not just being planned by today’s leaders — it is increasingly being shaped by the students who will become its next generation.
Through its Student Ambassador Program and student-led initiatives, the Center for Accounting Transformation is building a new model for engaging emerging professionals — one where students are not simply introduced to the profession but actively help shape how it evolves.
Now, thanks to a fiscal sponsorship agreement with Fiscal Sponsorship Allies (FSA), individuals, firms, and organizations can make tax-deductible contributions to support these student-driven initiatives and expand their impact nationwide.
More importantly, sponsorship helps unlock new opportunities for students to lead.
“We’re building leadership opportunities and networks that help us see ourselves in the profession. When someone believes in you early, it changes everything.”
A Student-Led Model for the Profession’s Future
The Center’s Student Ambassador Program was created around a simple idea: students should help design the career pathways meant for them.
Rather than traditional outreach efforts that attempt to “market” accounting careers to students, the program empowers students to lead conversations with their peers, share their own experiences, and explore the profession alongside mentors and practitioners.
“What if students helped design the kind of career programs we actually want and need?” said Arpan Grewal, a senior at Indiana Connections Academy who helped develop elements of the initiative. “Programs hit different when they’re led by students — because we actually get it.”
Students participating in the program help host peer conversations, produce content that explores real career questions, and collaborate with professionals who provide mentorship and perspective.
“It’s real and relatable — not something talking at students,” Grewal said. “We’re building leadership opportunities and networks that help us see ourselves in the profession. When someone believes in you early, it changes everything.”
Empowering Students to Lead
Center founder and Inspiration Architect Donny Shimamoto said the student-driven structure is intentional.
“At the Center, we believe students should have a voice in shaping the future of the profession,” Shimamoto said. “They are the ones asking the questions, exploring possibilities, and thinking about what meaningful careers look like in a rapidly changing world.”
“Our role is to create space for those voices, provide mentorship and support, and open doors for students to lead,” he added. “When you trust students with leadership and creativity, they bring insights the profession genuinely needs.”
Expanding Opportunities Through Philanthropic Support
With fiscal sponsorship now in place, supporters can help expand the reach of the Center’s student programs through charitable contributions.
Donations made through Fiscal Sponsorship Allies — a 501(c)(3) public charity — are tax-deductible and designated specifically for the Center’s student initiatives.
The sponsorship provides nonprofit governance, financial stewardship, and administrative support while allowing the Center to focus on growing opportunities for students across the country.
“FSA is proud to fiscally sponsor the Center for Accounting Transformation,” said Olivia Cloer, Interim CEO of Fiscal Sponsorship Allies. “The work they are doing with youth is incredibly important.”
Fiscal sponsorship helps mission-driven initiatives focus on impact while ensuring strong nonprofit oversight and transparency.
Why Student Leadership Matters
Across the accounting profession, organizations and firms are exploring new ways to strengthen the future workforce.
The Center’s student-led approach reframes the challenge: instead of asking how to better promote the profession to students, it asks how students themselves can help shape what the profession becomes.
Through leadership opportunities, peer engagement, and practitioner collaboration, the program helps students move from passive awareness of accounting careers to active participation in the profession’s future.
The new funding pathway will help expand:
- The national Student Ambassador Program
- Student-led conversations about accounting careers
- Leadership development opportunities for emerging professionals
- Collaborative initiatives connecting students and practitioners
