Students Redefine “Career Readiness” — and It’s Not What You Think

“Transformation starts with curiosity.”

When people talk about “career readiness,” it’s usually all about technical skills — classes taken, exams passed, software learned. But after a full year of real conversations with professionals across the accounting profession, we’ve learned something important:

That’s not what actually prepares you for a career.

In our end-of-year episode of Student-led Conversations, we reflected on what happens when students aren’t just the audience — but the ones asking the questions. Alongside Donny Shimamoto, CPA, CITP, CGMA, founder and Inspiration Architect of the Center for Accounting Transformation, we looked back on a season filled with honest stories, unexpected lessons, and moments that reshaped how we think about careers, confidence, and growth.

How Student-led Conversations Started
The idea for Student-led Conversations came from a simple realization. When Arpan Grewal, the series’ original host, first appeared on Accounting ARC interviewing the podcast’s trio she expected to learn about technical skills and career ladders. Instead, what stood out were the personal stories — failures, doubts, pivots, and moments of uncertainty. “I realized accounting isn’t just about numbers,” Arpan shared. “It’s about people.”

That realization became the foundation for this series: a space where students ask real questions about careers, mental health, identity, and what success actually looks like — topics that don’t always show up in classrooms or recruiting brochures.

Learning by Doing (Even When It’s Scary)
Harshita Multani joined the podcast after seeing a post online. At the time, she didn’t have much background in accounting — but she did have curiosity. “I didn’t know much,” she said. “But I was willing to learn.”

That mindset became a theme throughout the season. Both talked openly about nerves, imposter syndrome, and the pressure of interviewing professionals like Byron Patrick, Liz Mason, and Ron Baker — all while still being students. And honestly? That’s where the growth happened.

Why This Model Works
According to Donny, the power of Student-Led Conversations comes from flipping the usual script. “Instead of professionals telling students what they need to know,” he explains, “students are asking what they want to know.”

That shift changes everything. Guests open up more. Conversations go deeper. Topics like failure, burnout, career detours, and mental health aren’t avoided — they’re welcomed.

Normalizing Failure, Growth, and Mental Health
Some of the most impactful episodes weren’t about success at all. Conversations around mental health, women’s leadership, and resilience stood out — including a Women’s History Month episode with Kelly Mann that became deeply personal. “Hearing about real challenges — not just wins — changes how students see their own futures,” Arpan reflected.

Donny added that this transparency matters even more for Gen Z, especially in a world shaped by social media highlight reels. “Even top professionals struggle. What matters is how you work through it.”

Accounting Is Bigger Than Accounting
One of the biggest takeaways from the season? Accounting isn’t narrow — it’s connective. “We’re the underpinning of business,” Donny said. “That makes accounting universally applicable.” Critical thinking, communication, adaptability, advocacy — these skills matter no matter where your career goes. You don’t have to follow a traditional path for your education or experiences to be valuable.

Advice for Students Watching
As we wrapped the episode, this episode shares advice for students thinking about stepping outside their comfort zone: “Just do it,” Arpan said. “You don’t know what you’re capable of until you try.” Harshita added: “The most authentic moments come when you stop trying to be perfect.” And Donny reframed the idea of “fake it till you make it” — emphasizing preparation, openness, and adaptability instead.

Looking Ahead
With a second season ahead, Student-led Conversations will continue to center student voices — not as future professionals, but as current contributors to the profession’s evolution.
