Navigating the Accounting World with Tenacity and Authenticity

A Story of Data-Driven Success and Personal Resilience in the Face of Adversity 

In a recent bonus episode of Accounting ARC, Donny Shimamoto, CPA.CITP, CGMA, hosts Rebecca “Becky” DuPree, an accomplished professional with 17 years in public accounting and internal audit. DuPree, originally from Mercedes, Texas, shared her inspiring journey and experiences in the accounting world, shedding light on the diverse career paths within the profession. 

DuPree’s career began with a degree in accounting from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and an MBA from Sam Houston State University. Initially drawn to law, her aptitude for accounting led her to a successful career in both public accounting and internal audit. Currently, she works in property tax for a county tax assessor-collector, a role that combines her expertise in internal audit and her passion for data analytics. 

A significant aspect of DuPree’s career involves data analysis. She explained how she uses data to identify discrepancies in hotel occupancy tax collections, demonstrating the critical role of data in modern auditing. This meticulous approach has helped her uncover significant discrepancies and recover funds, underscoring the importance of data analytics in ensuring compliance and preventing fraud. 

DuPree’s journey has not been without challenges. As a transgender woman, she faced significant hurdles in her professional life. Her story of resilience is both moving and inspiring, and is detailed in the Journal of Accountancy’s “When a Colleague Announces They’re Transgender.” DuPree described her early struggles with identity and the fear of coming out in a professional setting. Despite these challenges, she persevered, finding support in her family and eventually transitioning while maintaining her professional responsibilities. Her transition journey was fraught with difficulties, including job changes and dealing with unsupportive colleagues. However, DuPree found strength in her supportive spouse and daughter, highlighting the importance of a loving and understanding family. Her story emphasizes that with determination and support, it is possible to overcome even the most daunting challenges. 

Throughout her career, DuPree has been committed to helping others. Whether mentoring junior accountants or supporting transgender colleagues, her kindness and dedication have left a lasting impact. She shared a touching story of a colleague’s transgender child, who found the courage to come out after hearing DuPree’s story, spotlighting the profound impact that sharing personal experiences can have on others.
