Transforming CSR and ESG into Accounting Opportunities

Guest Transformation Talks host Donny Shimamoto, CPA.CITP, CGMA, welcomes James Ross, the corporate responsibility and sustainability executive for Buzzacott, one of the largest accounting firms in the United Kingdom.

In this episode, Ross and Shimamoto discuss how accountants have the power to change the world, especially when the commitment to change comes from the top down.

“There can be some nervousness around sharing information that maybe isn’t seen as being absolutely the very best it could be because, as part of that process, you’re learning where you need to make improvements. You’re also holding yourself accountable, putting something into the world to say where you’re going to start making changes. If it isn’t perfect, and I don’t think any firm could ever say that they are, communicating how you intend to improve upon that is just as important because that engenders trust.”

Ross and Shimamoto talk about how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting maps to—but is different from—Environmental Social & Governance (ESG) reporting, how CSR helps to create diversity of thought, and how CSR and ESG can help improve recruiting and retention. Additionally, the two discuss the opportunities that CSR and ESG provide to accountants as part of their leadership in corporate governance and business reporting.
