An accounting influencer in the United Kingdom shares how he started as a math teacher and transformed into a global storyteller.

In a recent episode of the Accounting ARC podcast, Donny Shimamoto hosted Rob Brown, a prominent figure in the accounting world, to discuss the evolution and future of the accounting profession. Despite being separated by time zones, with Shimamoto in Hawaii and Brown in the UK, their conversation highlighted the global nature of accounting and its widespread impact.

Brown, a former high school math teacher, recounted his diverse career path. After realizing his passion for motivating and influencing people, he transitioned into business development and networking. His journey took a significant turn in 2016 when a brain hemorrhage forced him to reevaluate his life and career. This pivotal moment led him to focus solely on the accounting profession, where he found his true calling in amplifying the voices of accountants and influencing the industry.

The duo delve into the concept of accounting influencers, not as social media personalities, but as individuals and organizations that serve and shape the accounting profession. The Accounting Influencers Roundtable, founded by Brown, brings together various stakeholders, including tech providers, coaches, consultants, and media outlets, to discuss how they can better support accountants. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the profession and address its challenges.

A significant theme in their discussion was the importance of diversity in accounting. Both emphasize that the profession needs to move beyond its traditional image of “old, stale, male, and pale” to embrace a more inclusive and diverse workforce. This includes not just racial and gender diversity, but also a diversity of disciplines and thinking. By showcasing the varied opportunities within accounting, they hope to attract young talent and change the outdated perceptions of the profession.

Brown shares his insights on personal branding and reputation building, crucial elements for success in any field. His work involves helping accountants develop these skills to stand out and make a meaningful impact. This, he believes, is essential for attracting and retaining top talent in an increasingly competitive landscape.
