Interview shows how the Center for Accounting Transformation Aligns with Global Goals

The latest episode of the Accounting Alchemy Network (AAN) Lyceum podcast features an insightful conversation between Mathew Heggem, co-founder of AAN, and Donny Shimamoto, founder and inspiration architect of the Center for Accounting Transformation. This episode shines a spotlight on the impactful work being carried out by the Center, highlighting its role in driving positive change within the accounting profession.

Center Origins
Shimamoto, who is also the founder and managing director of IntrapriseTechKnowlogies LLC, discussed the inception of the Center for Accounting Transformation, emphasizing its mission to address gaps in the accounting profession.

“The Center came into being three years ago with a focus on providing actionable steps for small and mid-sized organizations,” Shimamoto explains. “We wanted to make a real impact by moving beyond traditional CPE and education.”

Integrity in Research
Over the past three years, the Center has shifted to research-based initiatives aimed at solving industry-wide issues such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Staffing Solutions.

Shimamoto outlines the rigorous research processes employed by the Center.

“We start by questioning existing data and conducting comprehensive, unbiased research to uncover actionable insights,” he says. “This ensures our findings are practical and beneficial for the profession.”

Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals
The podcast explores how the Center’s work aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Shimamoto illustrated this by discussing initiatives that help accountants in developing countries improve job prospects, thus addressing poverty. The Center also promotes good health and well-being through personal resilience programs aimed at accounting professionals.

“When you look at the impact we have as accountants, from addressing poverty to promoting good health and well-being, it’s clear that our work aligns with many of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals,” Shimamoto says.

Quality education is another focus area for the Center. “Integrating financial education into high schools and middle schools is crucial,” he explains. “Early exposure to accounting principles can empower individuals and communities.” Additionally, The Center’s Agents of Transformation campaign seeks to attract younger generations to the profession by showcasing the significant impact accountants can have.

Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and ESG
The Center’s DEI initiatives are a major focus, with ongoing research aimed at creating better business cultures. Shimamoto says, “Our research aims to move beyond representation and achieve true equity throughout an individual’s career. It’s about creating inclusive workplaces where everyone feels they belong.” An upcoming webinar on July 16 will reveal the findings of this research, offering valuable insights for organizations striving for inclusivity.

By promoting better business practices and supporting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, the Center assists organizations in making holistic, sustainable decisions that benefit employees, communities, and the environment.

The AAN Lyceum podcast episode with Donny Shimamoto highlights the extensive work of the Center for Accounting Transformation in improving the accounting profession. Through research, education, and advocacy, the Center aligns its efforts with global goals to foster a better future.
